REFUGIUM CASARES

The earth in your hands

Refugium Casares is an architectural retreat in the hills of Andalusia. Embedded in a cultural landscape of olive groves and vineyards, a small ensemble of natural stone buildings emerges from the terrain. With only twenty-four rooms, Refugium focuses on silence, space and atmosphere. A refuge.

A refuge.

The Vision

In the hills above Casares, where the Andalusian landscape rises from the sea toward the mountains, a special place is emerging.

A place of quiet. A place of retreat. A place where architecture becomes part of the land.

Refugium Casares is not a conventional hotel. It is a refuge — a place where people can step away from the speed of the modern world.

The architecture grows out of the terrain. Buildings follow the natural contours of the hillside and are partially embedded in the earth.

From above they appear not as volumes, but as subtle lines in the landscape.

Visitors experience a sequence of spaces structured around four elemental experiences: Sky, Fire, Water, Earth.

Agriculture, architecture and landscape merge into one living cultural landscape. Refugium Casares is an invitation to slow down, reconnect with nature, and return to the earth.

The Location

Refugium lies in the hills above Casares in Andalusia. Only 25 minutes separate the property from the Mediterranean Sea near La Duquesa.

The location combines two worlds: the tranquility of the Andalusian countryside and the proximity to the Costa del Sol.

Olive groves, vineyards and natural watercourses define the landscape.

Hydrology & landscape structure

The property with around 140.000 m2 follows the natural structure of the hillside. Several rules shape the architecture:

  • The groundwater zone remains untouched.
  • A natural depression is preserved.
  • A five-meter distance to the stream is maintained.
  • A 25-meter landscape buffer protects the surroundings.

Architecture grows only along the south-facing slope. Buildings follow the contour lines and blend into the terrain.

Elemental sequence in the landscape

The spatial experience of Refugium follows a sequence of four elemental atmospheres: Sky, Fire, Water, Earth.

These elements structure the architecture and guide the visitor through the landscape.

Architecture

The architecture is intentionally reduced.

Buildings are integrated into the hillside and constructed using local natural stone.

Patios, circular openings and controlled light create a unique spatial atmosphere.

The architecture does not dominate the landscape. It becomes part of it.

A sequence of atmospheres that guides perception and pace across the terrain.

Quiet structure. Natural materials. Timeless proportions.

Cultivated Landscape

Cultivated Landscape

Refugium is part of a productive landscape.

Olive groves are restored.

Vineyards grow on the terraces of the hill.

Oil and wine are produced on site.

A small bodega, olive mill and horse stables complement the ensemble.

Architecture, agriculture and hospitality form one living system.
